Microwave LASER
using an embedded system to wirelessly power stuff with an microwave laser. much like the other wireless power idea, this would have a simple embedded system, and more complicated other stuff.
plus fucking laser beams. fuck yeah. lasers.
Wireless Power/Charging
How could would a wireless charging system be? look down for the answer!
It would be very cool!
this has a lot of other fields in it, but the actual embedded mechanics wouldn’t be too complicated, maybe just programming a wireless base station, so simple programming. but we’d have to work on a lot of other stuff like induction powering devices and things, which actually might not be very hard if we do some simple research/professor collaboration!
HUGE potential with a project like this one.
Laptop Base Station
In a similar vein to the external video card idea, this would allow for a device that has the portablility of a netbook, with the processing power of a desktop when at its ‘base’.
think of ‘docking’ the device for incresed processing power, and being able to remove it to take on the go.
Expense Tracker
i mentioned about using some OCR reader to read receipts and automatically generate entries in your daily expense report (since we all know it’s a bitch to keep track of expenses since it is such a pain in the ass to type stuff in… and too bad it’s too expensive to pay someone to do data-entry for these kinds of stuff, unless you’re buying porshes for breakfasts and fortune 500 companies for lunch… but i’m digressing).
I was thinking whether it is possible to create the same functionality using existing hardware (it needs some integrating, of course). I was toying with the idea of having the supermarkets to print out a semacode [that contains relevant information about your purchase] at the end of the receipt that you can read in using your cell phone (i know nokia phones can read semacodes). this will then automatically create an entry in your handphone and therefore eliminate manual data entry (which totally sucks). we could expand on that idea i.e. we don’t really need to use a semacode, since i can forsee how companies that might want to collaborate on this project would want some exclusivity on their devices.
Camera with GPS
Wouldn’t it be cool if you could integrate your camera with your GPS, such that you don’t ever have to recall where you took that damn beautiful shot because the image captures the lat/long data with it GPS receiver?
I did a quick search on the Internet and it seems that something similar is in Kodak’s development pipelines.

Nikon is coming up with a similar product, with a wireless capability that will automatically upload photos (via 3G or Wi-Fi when it detects the relevant network).

Stylish Purse
embed a system to keep track of how much money somebody spends into a purse or wallet.
Dancing! Beats! Music!
hook up electromyogram stuff up to a person, and have their muscle contraction translate into music and beats and stuff!
simple idea with cool properties!
